Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS),
announces the following breaking news in this Online DS News Update "bulletin."

--- NEW DS COMIC BOOK SERIES PLANNED

--- 1970 & 1971 DS MOVIES TO BE RELEASED ON DVD AT LAST

**** NEW DS COMIC BOOK SERIES DEBUTS THIS YEAR

SG shares information from the 7-18 "official press release" from Dynamite Entertainment. The company plans to release "Dark Shadows # 1," the first of its new DS comic book series, in October.

"Television's original reluctant vampire is back! Barnabas Collins is re-adjusting to life under his vampiric curse. Haunted by terrifying dreams of his age-old lover and nemesis, Angelique, and fighting his bloodlust, Barnabas fears that danger lies ahead for all who live at Collinwood. Meanwhile, Barnabas's ally and trusted friend Dr. Julia Hoffman is harboring secrets of her own." DS #1 is "picking up directly where the original daytime episodes left off ((April, 1971)), the new (comics) will bring the familiar residents of Collinwood further into the 1970s, facing threats both old and new."

It is "written by Stuart Manning and drawn by Aaron Campbell, with covers by Campbell and superstar artist Francesco Francavilla (Black: Panther: Man Without Fear, Swamp Thing)."

"To find a comic shop near you, call 1-888-comicbook or visit www.comicshoplocator.com
For art and more information, please visit www.dynamite.net

"Dynamite Entertainment was founded in 2004 and is home to several best-selling comic book titles and properties... In addition to their critically-acclaimed titles and best-selling comics, Dynamite works with some of the most high-profile creators in comics and entertainment... and a host of up and coming new talent! DYNAMITE is consistently ranked in the upper tiers of comic-book publishers.... Dynamite also controls and owns multiple libraries."

**** HOUSE OF DS & NIGHT OF DS TO BE RELEASED IN 2012

SG has long reported about the 2 MGM theatrical movies, made while the original DS daytime series was still on the air: "House of Dark Shadows" (HODS) came  to theaters in 1970, and "Night of Dark Shadows" (NODS) followed in general release in 1971.

SG now can announce that plans call for both films to come out on dvd at some time following the expected May 11, 2012 theatrical opening of the new DS movie. This DS starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton is now in production in England (see recent SG Updates and SG print issues).

The release schedule for the dvds is yet to be determined. The dvds are expected to include previously-edited footage..

HODS was a big box office success for MGM, spurring production of NODS. But just before release, studio executives ordered editing out some NODS scenes for "violent content" (1971 standards). The film as released thus seemed disjointed and incomplete. The cut footage was considered lost.

In 1999, the missing footage was located by film historian Darren Gross. It lacked a soundtrack and needed restoration to improve its quality. Most of the original cast have re-recorded their dialogue, and up until his death in 2006, Dan Curtis worked to have the movie restored and released. The effort was never completed.

HODS and NODS both used cast members from the daytime show, whose characters were written out of the daily soap while they filmed on location in and around Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, NY. The actors/actresses usually re-created their TV characters, though some played new characters instead.

SG will continue to announce and report developments for the HODS/NODS' releases.

Please Note - A second Update, SG Update #244, will be posted shortly after this Update.

Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS),
announces the following breaking news in this Online DS News Update "bulletin."

--- NEW DS MOVIE UPDATE: CAMEO APPEARANCES FILMED

--- REPORTING: DS AT COMIC CON INTERNATIONAL IN SAN DIEGO

--- UPDATE: DS FESTIVAL - DS' 45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION -
ANNOUNCING: NEW GUEST & MEMBERSHIP RATES INFO

**** ORIGINAL DS ACTORS IN CAMEO APPEARANCES

SG reports that Jonathan Frid, Lara Parker, David Selby, and Kathryn Leigh Scott flew to England in late June to film brief cameos in the new DS motion picture. They inform SG that it was a wonderful experience and that the movie cast and crew were extremely enthusiastic and gracious. They spent 3 days at Pinewood Studios, where filming began in May and continues into the fall.

In the original 1966-71 DS, Jonathan is best-known as Barnabas; Lara as Angelique; David as Quentin; and Kathryn as Maggie and Josette.

Each SG has steadily reported about the project since it was first publicly announced 4 years ago this week. The movie stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas and is directed by Tim Burton. Both are DS fans since childhood.

Lara tells SG: "We were treated like royalty." Johnny and Tim "couldn't have been more gracious, and when Johnny met Jonathan, he said, 'We wouldn't be here if not for you.'"

While on the set, the 4 also met several movie cast members, among them Helena Bonham-Carter (Dr. Julia Hoffman) and Michelle Pfeiffer (Elizabeth Collins Stoddard), who have been watching the original DS episodes on DVD and now "they are totally hooked!" They also met Eva Green (Angelique - originated by Lara); Bella Heathcoate (Victoria Winters); Chloe Moretz (Carolyn Stoddard); and Gulliver McGrath (David Collins).

SG previously reported Danny Elfman is scoring the movie and Robert Cobert's classic "Dark Shadows Theme" would possibly be incorporated. SG now updates that Bob's memorable Theme will be part of the soundtrack.

No further information is available at this time. The upcoming SG #121 and future SG issues, as well as these SG Online Updates, will have more confirmed information as it is available.

Also see recent SG Updates and SG #119-#120 for more casting and filming details.

**** DS AT COMIC CON INTERNATIONAL

SG Update #242 announced that LARA PARKER and KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT would appear at Comic Con International in San Diego. They were there yesterday, Fri., 7- 22.

They visited with fans and signed autographs at the Hermes Press booth in the afternoon, followed by a DS Panel Talk from 6:00-7:00.

Lara tells SG there was a great turnout of fans at the booth and lots of "good questions" at the talk. Lara autographed copies of her DS novel "The Salem Branch" and Kathryn had her new novel "Dark Passages." They also signed Hermes' debuting re-issued volume of the "Dark Shadows Digest" and Hermes' first 2 hardbound volumes of the 1960s-70s Gold Key DS comic books.

At the panel, Kathryn and Lara both spoke in general about the new DS movie and how they, Jonathan, and David were in England to shoot their cameos. They emphasized they could not reveal any details, though the film will reflect Johnny's and Tim's styles. Both ladies appreciated Johnny's many affectionate comments to the media about the 1966-71 series and Jonathan's distinctive interpretation of Barnabas. The character Jonathan created is considered by many as an iconic precursor to today's portrayals of sympathetic, more "human" vampires.

The new SG #121 print issue will have more of Lara's comments about filming the DS movie cameos in England, as well as the DS Panel Talk and autograph session at Comic Con.

**** DS FESTIVAL CONVENTION - CELEBRATING DS' 45TH ANNIVERSARY

New Dark Shadows comic from Dynamite Entertainment

More cool comics news! Check out the official press release on CBR:

Television's original reluctant vampire is back! Julia Hoffman is harboring secrets of her own. Written by Stuart Manning and drawn by Aaron Campbell, with covers by Campbell and superstar artist Francesco (Black: Panther: Man Without Fear, Swamp Thing) make sure to get the horrifying Dark Shadows #1!

Collinwood, an ancestral mansion on the remote Maine coastline, is home to the Collins family, a dynasty haunted by secrets and a supernatural curse spanning two centuries. Barnabas Collins is facing an uncertain future and new threats. Cursed in 1795 by the witch Angelique, Barnabas has lived as a vampire for almost two centuries. Out of his own time and now a self-appointed protector for the Collins family, accompanied by his loyal confidante Dr. Julia Hoffman, Barnabas lives in fear that Angelique might return as he seeks a cure from his vampiric affliction. Picking up directly where the original daytime episodes of Dark Shadows left off, the new comic book will bring the familiar residents of Collinwood further into the 1970s, facing threats both old and new.

Jim Pierson of Dan Curtis Productions, the show's creator, declares "Dark Shadows still casts its imaginative spell on so many devoted fans who have discovered the series over the past four decades, captivated by its unique blend of Gothic romance, mystery, horror and a touch of science fiction."

Says writer Stuart Manning, "With stunning artwork capturing the likenesses of the classic actors and exciting new serialized stories, the Dark Shadows comic will appeal to both the original generation of fans who ran home from school and new audience of fans ushered in by Tim Burton's forthcoming big screen remake, starring Johnny Depp."

"I am so happy to work with someone of Stuart's expertise and caliber," states Dynamite Entertainment President and Publisher Nick Barrucci. "Aaron's fantastic work on Sherlock Holmes and Green Hornet: Year One and Francesco Francavilla's covers are truly a sight to behold!"

"We've really put together a great team," adds Editor Joe Rybandt. "Stuart is crafting a tale for fans old and new, and Aaron's incredible detail will find a perfect home with this title, capturing the mood and atmosphere of Dark Shadows perfectly. It's gonna be a truly Gothic affair."

I am definitely adding this one to my pull list!
