Filming Begins on Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows”

Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter head an all-star cast.
BURBANK, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Filming begins this week on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ “Dark Shadows,” which brings the cult classic television series to the big screen under the direction of Tim Burton. The film’s all-star ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.
In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.
Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.
Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.
Burton is directing and producing “Dark Shadows” from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, story by John August and Grahame-Smith, based on the television series created by Dan Curtis. Also producing are Oscar® winner Richard D. Zanuck (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Driving Miss Daisy”), continuing his long association with Burton; Oscar® winner Graham King (“Rango,” “The Departed”), continuing his collaboration with Depp; Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, and David Kennedy. The executive producers are Chris Lebenzon, Nigel Gostelow, Tim Headington, and Bruce Berman.
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, Oscar®-winning production designer Rick Heinrichs (“Sleepy Hollow”), Oscar®-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Alice in Wonderland”) and editor Chris Lebenzon (“Alice in Wonderland”). The score will be composed by Danny Elfman.
“Dark Shadows” is being filmed entirely in England, both at Pinewood Studios and on location.
“Dark Shadows” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

**** JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT STARS IN "HESHER"

Joe has the title role in HESHER, opened in limited release 5-13. SG #117-#118 has extensive commentaries, reviews, and analyses of the film after it world-premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Co-starring and produced by 2010 Oscar-winner Natalie Portman, it's the story of a father and son, deeply grieving after the recent death of their wife/mother in a car accident. Joe's brash, long-haired heavy-metal character literally moves into their home and becomes the violent catalyst - physically and emotionally - in changing their lives. The slang term "hesher" means a burned-out, delinquent, profane "loser" living on the edge of society. HESHER is rated R for "disturbing violent behavior, sexual content including graphic dialogue, pervasive language, and drug content."

Please share with SG any HESHER articles, reviews, interviews, or publicity material you find. Send all materials to SG's e- or postal- mail addresses below.

**** KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT - PUBLICATION PARTY FOR NEW NOVEL

A publication party for Kathryn's supernatural thriller novel "Dark Passages" will be held 8-7 at Diesel Bookstore in Santa Monica (Brentwood), CA.

Reflecting Kathryn's (Maggie) own DS ties, it's a story set in the early 1960s about a popular hit TV soap opera. A young woman actress, who's actually a telekinetic vampire raised to resist human blood, joins the series' cast. She finds herself confronted by "her nemesis, a beautiful spell-weaving 300-year-old witch bent on destroying her." The 2 also vie for "the affections of a handsome young mortal with a secret life of his own."

The publication party will be at 3:00 on 8-7 at Diesel - A Bookstore in Brentwood, located in the Brentwood Country Mart, 225 26th St., Santa Monica, CA. 90402. 310-576-9960.

Fans attending the event are welcome to share their photos and reports with SG.

Why Johnny Depp wants a third baby

By Ruben V. Nepales

LOS ANGELES—Johnny Depp’s shorter hair looks good on him. “I cut it off for the next one, ‘Dark Shadows,’” the actor said when complimented about it. “The filming is coming up very soon,” he added, referring to the London shoot next month of his and Tim Burton’s movie take on the vampire TV series that ran from 1966 to 1971.
It was our first time to see Johnny with sleeves rolled up to his biceps. So we saw the tattoos on his arms for the first time, too. “They’re pieces of the puzzle, little snippets of the journey,” Johnny said as he gamely obliged to describe each one. “I started getting tattoos when they were sort of verboten in Hollywood... 1983, 1984. I was 17 when I got the first one [a Cherokee chief, to honor] my Indian heritage. Each one explains a certain point in my life. My kids, certainly. Lily-Rose is here; Jack here. Jack just came around prior to my Captain Jack role. Some are reminders of relatives—my grandfather, my mom. She was a waitress at the Holiday Inn in Kentucky. [This is] her waitress picture.”
Back as Captain Jack
Johnny is back as Captain Jack in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” with Geoffrey Rush, Keith Richards and Kevin R. McNally reprising their roles, and Penelope Cruz appearing in the franchise for the first time. She was pregnant with her baby with Javier Bardem when she shot her scenes as Captain Jack’s protagonist.
Asked if he gave advice to Javier, the father of two (Lily-Rose, 11, and Jack, 9) smiled and replied: “In terms of advice for Javier, on how to spoil his woman and his child, he’s got it down. It’s pretty great to watch them... You start thinking, wow, I’d like to have another one of those (babies)... But I don’t know. Two is pretty good.”
Johnny praised Penelope for being such a trouper while they filmed a sequence “on this little spit of an island in Puerto Rico.” He said, “It was beautiful but scorching... maybe 100 degrees. Everyone was woozy from the heat. And there was Penelope, seconds away from giving birth... or it felt like that in the heat. She just kept pushing forward. She was unbelievable. [She would] take off the majority of her costume and go straight into the ocean in between takes. Or in between setups, she’d just cool off, cool down the baby. Then get dressed again and do the scene. Then into the water again.”
Johnny and Penelope have been friends since they acted together in “Blow.” He continued: “You’ve got this pregnant woman sword-fighting. That’s a very strange image. But... because of her experience in dance, it looked accurate, effortless. There was never a slip up. She was obviously careful of the bun in the oven, as they say.”
The two stars are sure to bring glamour and more popping flash bulbs when they attend the Cannes premiere of “Pirates” tomorrow, Saturday.
However, Johnny was ambivalent about the film taking a slot in the festival on the Croisette: “When they brought up the idea of bringing ‘Pirates’ to Cannes, there was a part of me that went, Cannes should be about small films or independent films, those films that are like the little engine that could. But they had the idea to hold the movie’s French premiere at the festival. I’m excited to bring the film to France. However, in the back of my mind, I’m thinking, have we just taken three other films off the slate? I felt a little guilty and a little bad.”
‘What was that chord?’
On having Keith back as his dad in this fourth installment, Johnny said about the legendary guitarist, the inspiration for his mascara-ed pirate: “Without a doubt, [it was] an honor. It was fun to have Keith around for a few days. We shared a trailer. We just hung around for a few days and talked. I built up the nerve to ask him, ‘What the hell is this chord in ‘Make No Mistake’? My ear is pretty good but it’s been years and I could never figure it out.’ He goes, ‘The fourth chord.’ I said, ‘Yeah, exactly!’ He goes, ‘Yeah…’ I said, ‘Well, what is it?’ He picked up the guitar—bang, brrmm! He showed me the chord. It was one of those moments that are seared in your brain for the rest of your life.”
Johnny is taking his time on the documentary he’s making on the Rolling Stones guitarist. “We’ve got about 35, 36 hours of interview and performance footage,” said the actor who makes his docu directorial debut with this project. “There’s no rush.”
In the meantime, Johnny sounded pumped up to portray centuries-old vampire Barnabas Collins in “Dark Shadows,” originally a gothic TV soap created by Dan Curtis. “My approach to Barnabas will be on the flaws and insecurities of a vampire,” he revealed. “Having been in a coffin for 200 years, he experiences the absurdity of a world that he’s just entered, where macramé owls hanging on a wall or fake fruits on a dish are widely accepted. From where he comes, in the 18th century, it would have been ludicrous. I want to see a vampire who’s 200 years old or more, experience television for the first time.”
He added with a chuckle: “It’s classic horror vampire—Nosferatu, Lugosi-esque vampire, without the accent.”

Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS),

--- SG LAST-MINUTE ANNOUNCEMENT: JOHNNY DEPP GUESTS ON "OPRAH"
--- DAVID SELBY & BEN CROSS STAR IN "DRACULA"

**** JOHNNY DEPP GUESTS ON "OPRAH" ON THURS., MAY 5

SG was just notified Johnny appears on the "Oprah" talk show tomorrow, Thursday, May 5. Please check your local listings for time and station.

SG's reported extensively about Johnny's upcoming adaptation of  "Dark Shadows," directed by his longtime collaborator Tim Burton. Both are self-avowed DS fans from childhood and Johnny's dream since then was to portray "Barnabas." SG announced the initial project in July, 2007, and has steadily informed and updated plans for the movie. Filming will begin very soon at London's Pinewood Studios and on ocation throughout England. SG will update future confirmed news.

Johnny is known for his iconic rapscallion character "Captain Jack Sparrow" in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie franchise. "POTC 4: On Stranger Tides" opens May 20, so his time on the "Oprah" show should focus on that highly-anticipated release. Yet his enthusiasm for DS, as his next filming project, may come up during the interview..

**** DAVID SELBY & BEN CROSS STAR IN RECORDED-LIVE "DRACULA"

David (1966-71 Quentin) and Ben (1991 Barnabas) will team for the first time in a limited-run presentation of "Dracula," based on Bram Stoker's famed novel. SG previously announced this event, but now updates about Ben's participation.

"Dracula" will be at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90049. Performances are May 18-20 at 8 pm, May 21 at 2:30pm, and May 22 at 4pm.

LATW's plays are recorded as they happen before a live audience in the radio show format. Actors are not in costume and there are no sets. The cast is seated onstage, holding bound scripts. They step up to microphones to perform their lines in character. Appropriate sound effects are created and music is added as the play unfolds. Audience reactions are recorded at the same time. The radio show format allows each actor to interpret his/her character through the spoken dialogue, enhanced by the music and sound effects.

"Dracula" is part of the LA Theatre Works' 2011 series. David has appeared in numerous LATW productions; he also is a member of the Board of Directors.and on the Artists Advisory Council.

The city seems helpless against his frightful power, and only one man, Dr. Van Helsing (David Selby), can stop the carnage. But to do this, he must uncover the vampire's lair and pierce his heart with a wooden stake. All performances will be recorded to air on L.A. **** "HOUSE OF DS" MOVIE TO AIR

The 1970 "House of Dark Shadows" theatrical release marked the first time a daytime soap opera had launched a full-length feature film. Rated GP for Mature Audiences (1970 ratings system) for strong violence, it was a major box office hit for MGM Studios that year and led to a second movie, "Night of DS,' in 1971. ((More information in SG print issues.))

TCM (Turner Classic Movies) will show HODS at midnight on Wed., May 11, as part of a marathon of Joan Bennett's films. Check your local listings and please share any publicity or other media coverage with SG.

Actors from the TV series - Joan Bennett, Louis Edmonds, Grayson Hall, Thayer David, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Nancy Barrett, John Karlen, David Henesy, Jerry Lacy, and Dennis Patrick among them - re-created their TV characters or portrayed other characters in a condensed telling
of Barnabas' release from the coffin after almost 200 years. The vampire terrorizes Collinsport and his decendants as he seeks the reincarnation of his long-dead love Josette. Dr. Julia Hoffman tries to cure him - and finds herself falling in love with the vampire, who's being hunted by
Prof. Elliott Stokes.

Johnny Depp on 'Dark Shadows': Can a vampire get corn stuck in his fangs?

“What I’d like to do with him is maybe stretch him out a bit — in the extreme. Just ever-so-slightly take him a little further, beyond what may be considered… corny.”
Wait, corny?
That’s Johnny Depp talking about his upcoming role as centuries-old, lovelorn vampire Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton’s new take on Dark Shadows.
Remember Dark Shadows?
Maybe it was the original daytime version of the vampire saga. Maybe it was the early ‘90s prime-time reboot. Depp sure remembers it, and now that he’s about to begin work on the big-screen remake, he is reflecting on his boyhood days, running home to see the world’s most peculiar soap opera.
“Barnabas Collins… ” Depp says, wistfully speaking the name of  his character. “I do remember, very vividly, practically sprinting home from school in the afternoon to see Jonathan Frid play Barnabas Collins. Even then, at that age, I knew – this has got to be weird.
The show ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971 with Canadian actor Frid in the lead role. Depp would have been between 3 and 8 years old when it aired. Dark Shadows was known for its cheap, campy effects, and bizarre, supernatural storylines – including ghosts, monsters, and other creatures of the night, beyond vampires — which set it far apart from its rival romance-based daytime dramas.
Then they rebooted it in the early ’90s featuring Ben Cross (and a very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt), though that venture was far more short-lived than Barnabas, enduring only one season.
Depp says his inspiration comes from the original, which had a hand in warping his young mind. “I loved it. I loved the show,” he says. “This soap opera with gothic vampires. I knew, ‘This is not All My Children.’
He even intends to incorporate the show’s goofier aspects. “As naïve as the early, early episodes are, in his approach to Barnabas, Frid was such a striking presence, there’s definitely a sliver of him [in the new version.]” That’s when Depp says those immortal words: “What I’d like to do with him is maybe stretch him out a bit — in the extreme. Just ever so slightly take him a little further, beyond what may be considered … corny.”
Depp explains, laughing: “I’ve always sort of liked that. The idea that maybe you’ve got to go through bad acting to get to what may be really bad acting or — something interesting.”
Hey, it worked for Jack Sparrow, a performance the studio originally hated… until it started making them billions of dollars.
Dark Shadows starts shooting in London next month. It’s expected to hit theaters next year.
