from TG DAILY

On Tim Burton's Dark Shadows

Posted on December 8, 2011 - 17:09 by David Konow
As a big lover of retro TV, Dark Shadows is a huge favorite of mine, as is Kolchak the Night Stalker, two great horror shows from the sixties and seventies that were created by the late producer Dan Curtis.

A daily gothic horror soap opera is actually still a pretty radical idea, even in today's day and age, which is why some are undoubtedly wondering what today's audiences will think of Tim Burton's big screen version of Dark Shadows, which stars Johnny Depp as head vampire Barnabas Collins, and is slated to hit theaters on May 11, 2012.
Other actors joining the gothic vampire fun include Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Earle Haley, Christopher Lee, original Barnabas Collins Jonathan Frid, and Alice Cooper.
On Tim Burton's Dark ShadowsBurton paramour Helena Bonham Carter told MTV that while she loves Dark Shadows, and it's "very original" and "uncategorizable," she also believes "it's going to be impossible to sell, frankly, because it's just so... It's a soap opera but it's very, very subtle. It's a ghoststory but then it's an unhappy vampire story. It's a mixture of so many different things and a real ensemble piece."
Carter also mentioned that Burton is indeed an old school fan of the show, adding, "This was a thing that he raced home to see when he was about age 10. So it was returning to his childhood roots of what he loved watching."
Also speaking to MTV, Pfeiffer called Dark Shadows "a dream job" with "such a fun cast... We had so much fun. I just love working with Tim [Burton], I love watching him direct. [There's] nobody like him."
In spite of what Carter said, Pfeiffer hopes there will be sequels. As far as Dark Shadows being too out there to make a potential franchise, Pfeiffer said, "That's what we love about Tim's movies, they're not run-of-the-mill and they don't easily fit into one kind of genre."

DON BRISCOE

Cecil Donald "Don" Briscoe (born March 20, 1940, Yalobusha County, Mississippi — died October 31, 2004, Memphis, Tennessee) was an American soap opera actor, most notable for playing Tony Meritt (#2) onDays of Our Lives, and, from 1968–1970, for playing Chris Jennings, Tom Jennings, Timothy Shaw, and Chris Collins on Dark Shadows.
Briscoe left Dark Shadows abruptly in 1970 after suffering a "mental breakdown" (according to his sister, Bonny Jenkins) and eventually withdrew from the acting profession and relocated to live with family inMemphis. The deaths of his parents hit him badly. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and suffering from nervous disorders, manic-depression and drug problems, Briscoe settled into a reclusive lifestyle. Declared unable to work for a living by a psychiatrist, he managed to act occasionally in local theatre until the 1980s and worked for a time as a gas station attendant.[1]
He died in 2004 at his home in Memphis from heart disease.

Anyone who follows us here at Movies Blog and MTV News, for that matter, is well aware that we're just a little excited about "Dark Shadows," Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's next collaboration. In addition to our gushing over all the released photos, Depp weighed in on the subject himself, calling his Barnabas Collins a "classic monster character," and the film's composer Danny Elfman promised a "fun" and "wild" film.
Today we have more warm fuzzy words about the film via co-star Chloe Moretz, who we ran into at Spike's Scream Awards, where she talked about her experience making the film and why the film is so special.

“It was pretty amazing. I mean working with Tim Burton has always been a dream for me, so to actually get on set and work with Tim, and be in it with Johnny Depp, and Helena Bonham Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer, it was a dream come true because they are all my idols," she said. "To work people like that that know how to do it, and how to get it. It was really special I learned a lot.”

With regard to what separates the film from Burton and Depp's most recent collaborations, Moretz said "Shadows" harkens back to Burton's most iconic, classic films.
“I think it’s special because it goes back to Tim’s roots. It goes back to 'Beetlejuice,' and 'Edward Scissorhands' and it goes back to the true Tim," she explained. "I love it because he gets in it, and he's in that little circle with Michelle, and Helena and Johnny, and it just, it happens. Everything goes down in the movie.”
What do you think of Moretz's thoughts on the film? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!
