JONATHAN FRID HANDPRINTS CEREMONY

From July 15,2010 LA TIMES DS IN THE NEWS.....

July 15, 2010 | By Susan King, Los Angeles Times
Decades before Robert Pattinson's portrayal of brooding vampire Edward Cullen turned him into an international heartthrob, Jonathan Frid was inspiring a similar kind of ardor with his turn as the charismatic, enigmatic Barnabas Collins on ABC's gothic daytime drama "Dark Shadows," which ran from 1966 to 1971. This weekend, the Dark Shadows of the Sun convention will take place at the Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel. And at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the vintage Vista Theatre in Los Feliz, Frid will put his footprints in cement in the theater's courtyard.

DARK SHADOWS Lives On In New Audio Version Starring Original Cast

DARK SHADOWS, television’s legendary Gothic soap opera is set for a resurgence of interest in 2011, as director Tim Burton starts work on a big screen remake starring Johnny Depp. But the legacy of the original ABC‐TV series is alive and well, continuing in a series of brand‐new audio dramas from Big Finish Productions, starring the classic cast, produced under official license from Dan Curtis Productions.

Since 2006, Big Finish has released over 20 new stories, featuring DARK SHADOWS favorites such as David Selby (Quentin Collins), Lara Parker (Angelique), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans) and a special one‐off return from Jonathan Frid as vampire Barnabas Collins. Each story is presented in radio play format, with state‐of‐the‐art sound design and effects, backed with original music scores, including classic compositions by original composer Robert Cobert.

“Audio asks the listener to create the entire scene in their head, just by listening to these voices,” says Lara Parker, who returns as the dangerous witch Angelique. “The audience has to participate very strongly in audio drama, and that’s excellent for DARK SHADOWS.”

“It’s been wonderful to hear the original actors recreate their roles, 40 years on,” says DARK SHADOWS series producer Stuart Manning. “Their devotion to these characters is wonderful, and it’s been a fantastic experience picking up where the series left off.”

Further DARK SHADOWS audio stories are planned for 2011, as the show celebrates its 45th Anniversary. The Dark Shadows audio dramas are available on CD and download from http://www.bigfinish.com/dark%E2%80%90shadows.

Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS), announces the following breaking news in this Online News Update "bulletin."

**** ADDISON POWELL PASSES AWAY

Addison (Dr. Lang), age 89, died 11-8 in Burlington, Vermont. His career spanned film, TV, commercial, and theatre roles.

Burlington Free Press Obituary 11-12: "ADDISON POWELL (SHELBURNE) - Addison Powell, 89, passed away Monday evening, to the sounds of Vivaldi and The Beatles, and in the loving company of his three children.

"A film and stage actor, a World War II navigator, and a son of New England, Powell had lived in Vermont for 22 years, most recently in Shelburne Bay, an independent living community. He loved country walks, landscape painting, good books and a good joke, not to mention Handel on his DVD player and a BLT from Burlington Bay Market. To sit in the cool shadow of birches and pines on the porch of his summer cottage on Lake Champlain, built by his grandfather in 1900, was his great pleasure.

"He enjoyed a long career as a New York City-based stage, screen and TV actor. He played the CIA heavy in "Three Days of the Condor", a 1970s-era thriller, and his photograph, face to face with that other actor, Robert Redford (Redford's gun is nuzzled under Powell's chin) has appeared around the world. He played the father of the sizzling Jean Seberg in "In the French Style"; a hip bank robber in "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Steve McQueen; a starchy Admiral Nimitz in "MacArthur" with Gregory Peck; and a hard-boiled detective in "Contract on Cherry Street" with Frank Sinatra. He won an Obie for his performance as Willie Oban in "The Iceman Cometh" at Circle in the Square, a production that included Jason Robards and Peter Falk. On stage, he received fine notices in "Coastal Disturbances", which featured the Broadway debut of Annette Bening. He did television turns on "Gunsmoke" and "Bob Newhart" and appeared on the first episodes of "Law and Order" and "Mod Squad." He also played the evil Dr. Lang in 'Dark Shadows', a 1960s TV camp classic that years later garnered him the occasional letter from the slightly obsessed fan. He always was thrilled they remembered.

"Born in Belmont, MA in ((February 23)), 1921, the son of school teachers, he graduated from Boston University and joined the Army Air Force. Based in East Anglia, he flew 30 missions as a navigator in a B-17. After the war, he graduated from Yale Drama School. In 1950, he married a Michigan girl, Bunnie Rowley, and they raised three children in the tightly-knit vertical block association that is an Upper West Side apartment building. As his was a life and not a Hollywood movie, he knew joy and disappointments, and out of the complications of the latter came his longstanding membership in the fine fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bunnie died in 1995 and he never remarried.

"He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Mary Powell and Mark Brooks of South Hero, Julie and Richard Elmore of Westford, and Michael Powell and Evelyn Intondi of Brooklyn. His younger and beloved brother, Edward, also survives him; as do his eight grandchildren, Katie, Anthony, Michael, Nicholas, Tony, Aidan, Calvin, and Alexandra. They were his diamonds.

"Those wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to either the Sudan Development Foundation, 139 Elmwood Avenue, Burlington, VT or the Veterans Bedside Network, 10 Fiske Place, Room 328, Mt. Vernon, NY 10550."

--- SG notes a career addition to the obituary: Addison also was a familiar face in the long- running 1980s and 90s TV commercials as the fisherman-spokesman for frozen Gorton's Fish Sticks products.

--- The upcoming new SG #119 print issue will include pictures  of Addison from DS as well as all the latest confirmed DS-related news.
