Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS),
announces the following breaking news in this Online DS News Update "bulletin."

---- KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT'S HUSBAND GEOFF MILLER PASSES

SG sends deep sympathy wishes and condolences as we sadly announce the death of Geoff Miller. He was the husband of Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie, Josette, Kitty, Rachel). They were married in 1991.

Geoff had been ill for several years and died April 16 at his home in Beverly Hills of progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain disorder. He was 74.

Here, SG excerpts from the obituary in the Los Angeles Times, expected in the 4-18-11 edition of the newspaper.

"Geoff Miller, a founder of Los Angeles magazine, dies at 74
Geoff "helped lead Los Angeles magazine for 34 years, creating a glossy that reveled in celebrity but also, Miller said, was about the way the people of Los Angeles lived.

"For 34 years, (he) helped lead Los Angeles magazine, serving as editor-in-chief from 1974 to 1990 and publisher from 1990 until he retired 4 years later." Geoff was a UCLA graduate student "in the late 1950s (when) the concept for a magazine celebrating an 'unruly young city' started to take off" after he met "David Brown, an ad executive with an 'ambitious scheme,' Miller later wrote. Miller put aside plans for an urban arts magazine to help launch the Southern California Prompter in 1960. A year later, it was renamed Los Angeles magazine" and soon was billed as the 'Guide to the Good Life in L.A. and Suburbia.'"

The publication "reveled in 'the good life' while providing an extensive events calendar, often-irreverent arts reviews, personality profiles - and a fascination with fame so intense that the monthly has often been credited with inventing celebrity journalism,' the New York Times said in 1996." By 1972, Geoff realized "this magazine isn't about a city! It's about the way people live," because its articles and overall tone "capture the sensibility of Los Angeles." Yet it  also addressed issues "when they impinge on our readers' lives."

Born, "George Geoff Miller Aug. 1, 1936, in Salt Lake City,...as an infant (he) moved with his family to Beverly Hills. He was the second of two sons of businessman Edward Miller and his wife, the former Rosemary Conlon, a porcelain artist. At 13, Miller was one of four altar boys at actress Elizabeth Taylor's 1950 wedding to Conrad 'Nicky' Hilton Jr. in Beverly Hills. From UCLA, Geoff earned a bachelor's degree in 1958 and a master's in journalism a year later.

He married Barbara Selcer in 1974; she died of multiple sclerosis in 1985.

"At the magazine's offices in 1988, he ran into Scott, an author and actress on TV's "Dark Shadows." They married in 1991.

"In the mid-1990s, Miller became a publishing consultant and formed a company with his wife to develop film and TV projects. They split their time between London and Benedict Canyon, where he bought a home in 1974." Kathryn: "He was a jazz aficionado who 'just loved California and Los Angeles. He took a certain amount of pride in letting people in Los Angeles know what this city was all about."'

In addition to his wife, Miller is survived by two stepchildren from his first marriage, Steven Selcer and Lori Selcer, both of Los Angeles."

Geoff accompanied Kathryn to many DS Festivals in Los Angeles and NYC, frequently assisting at the tables where they both met and talked to fans as she signed autographs, posed for pictures, etc. He joined Kathryn at what would be his last Fest in Burbank (Los Angeles) July 16-18, 2010..

---- At this time, so soon after Geoff's passing, SG has not received any further information about arrangements, memorial donations, etc. I will share any such details as they are provided.
