Dark Shadows at Twilight: A Paley Center Vampire Weekend
Friday, November 13, 2009
to Sunday, November 15, 2009
New York
We are currently in the midst of an explosion in the popularity of vampires, with the Twilight movie franchise and HBO's gothic soap True Blood leading the undead charge-suddenly, it seems, audiences want blood. Why now? Is it the parlous state of the world, economic anxieties, the end result of a morbidly sex-and-youth obsessed popular culture?
The Paley Center for Media has partnered with Entertainment Weekly to explore what's going on. EW's Ken Tucker will moderate a panel of informed fans to debate the relative merits of vampires across media, with special attention to the rankings of the Paley Center's TV Vampire Poll (vote through November 2). A display of EW's coverage of the undead phenomenon will be on view in the Spielberg Gallery through November 15.
And don't miss the screenings of several past PALEYFEST events-with reunions of the casts and creative teams of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, True Blood, and Dark Shadows-along with the uber vamp Nosferatu and Guy Maddin's hypnotic Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary.
Tickets
Screenings are free to Members and $10 (general admission) for nonmembers. No reservations are required.

Trivia, special gifts, and a bloody good time for all!

---- SG Update #204(10-18) encouraged DS fans to visit the Paley Center website to vote for Barnabas Collins in its "TV Vampire (S)Takedown" poll. Voters were asked to help determine "Who is the best bloodsucker, the greatest ghoul, the ultimate undead, your favorite fiend? Stake your vote now in our TV vampire poll!" Voting ends tomorrow, Nov. 2.

--- SG note: This event honored DS during the annual Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles, March, 2001. It brought together many DS cast and crew members to discuss and reminisce about DS. Audience members asked questions and several scene clips screened. This is the only DS event ever attended by Dan Curtis, Kate Jackson,Alexandra Moltke Isles, and Lela Swift (director).
For more information and behind-the-scenes pictures, see SG print issues from that time. These are available from Marcy Robin at SG's e- or postal- mail addresses.

*** LECTURE ABOUT DAN CURTIS' HORROR CAREER, BY DR. JEFF THOMPSON
DS/horror/science fiction fan Jeff did his doctoral thesis on Dan's productions in the genre. It was published this year as "The Television Horrors of Dan Curtis." Jeff, an assistant English professor at Columbia University community college in Nashville, will discuss the book and the impact of Dan's TV projects.
Press release: "Curtis, a popular television producer in the 1960s and 1970s, pioneered a new breed of popular horror shows that were motivated by character, continuing story arcs, and a strong awareness of the genre literature of horror fiction. In Curtis' productions, knowing the background story of the various horror characters was essential to understanding the complex and serpentine plots."
The free lecture is Nov. 2 at 12:30 pm at the Ledbetter Auditorium in the Clement building on Columbia State's Columbia Campus. For more information, contact Mike Darrell at (931) 540-2714 or Stuart Lenig at (931) 540-2877 or slenig@columbiastat e.edu.

*** Fans attending the Paley "Vampire Weekend" or Jeff's talk are invited and encouraged to send their photos and reports plus local media coverage to SG. In this way, fans who cannot attend can share the experience with you. Please send all material to SG's e- or postal- mail addresses at the end of this Update.
