Johnny Depp was recently dubbed the biggest movie star in
Hollywood with two blockbusters which grossed a billion each back to
back: Pirates 4 and Alice in Wonderland.
This is why you can probably feel some relief that he’s headlining
the big screen version of Dark Shadows, the ‘60’s vampire soap opera
that aired on ABC. Depp will also be bringing bringing back Kolchak, the
short lived, but much beloved horror series of the ‘70’s.
Dark Shadows is now being made for Warner Brothers with Tim Burton
directing, and Depp starting as Barnabas Collins, a two hundred year old
vampire. The first shots that hit the ‘Net of Depp in his vampire
make-up initially weren’t promising, but the current photo posted on Empire looks much more like the Barnabas Collins of yore, combined with Burton’s trademark gothic sensibilities.
The
film will also feature Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie
Earle Haley, gothic horror legend Christopher Lee, and Alice Cooper. The
film’s screenplay was written by Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Pride
and Prejudice and Zombies, and Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.
Both Dark Shadows and Kolchak were created by Dan Curtis, who later did
the mini-series The Winds of War. Kolchak had Darren McGavin playing a
reporter who is constantly running into the supernatural, and his
newspaper editor doesn’t believe his stories.
At one point, the Se7en team of David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew
Kevin Walker were going to do a big screen Kolchak for DreamWorks,
which would have been perfect, but now Depp is spearheading the latest
effort to make a Kolchak movie. As Deadline reports, this incarnation of Kolchak is set up at Disney.
I’m not sure how much of a built-in audience there will be for a Dark
Shadows movie today, but many who grew up in the ‘60’s certainly
remember it fondly. As Suzidoll posted on MovieMorlocks,
"I remember racing home from school each day to catach tht show at 4:00
pm, sandwiched between the traditional soap opera General Hospital and
Dick Clark’s daily rock ‘n’ roll show, Where the Action Is...The appeal
of Dark Shadows was the gothic atmosphere that reeked of Romanticism
with a capital ‘R.’ Foggy exteriors, gloomy mansions, creepy portraits
of revered ancestors - created a mood that lured viewers..."
As far as Kolchak, there’s definitely a lot of strong memories and
enjoyment among us geek elite. For example, I have the entire show on
DVD, as well as the TV movies that launched the series, The Night
Stalker and The Night Strangler.
Although I obviously don’t have the power to speak on behalf of the
geeks of the world who would love to see the series return in the right
spirit, I don’t think I’d be speaking out of turn to saying the geeks
would definitely welcome a new Kolchak with open arms.

Anyone who follows us here at Movies Blog and MTV News, for that matter, is well aware that we're just a little excited about "Dark Shadows," Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's next collaboration. In addition to our gushing over all the released photos, Depp weighed in on the subject himself, calling his Barnabas Collins a "classic monster character," and the film's composer Danny Elfman promised a "fun" and "wild" film.
Today we have more warm fuzzy words about the film via co-star Chloe Moretz, who we ran into at Spike's Scream Awards, where she talked about her experience making the film and why the film is so special.
“It was pretty amazing. I mean working with Tim Burton has always been a dream for me, so to actually get on set and work with Tim, and be in it with Johnny Depp, and Helena Bonham Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer, it was a dream come true because they are all my idols," she said. "To work people like that that know how to do it, and how to get it. It was really special I learned a lot.”
With regard to what separates the film from Burton and Depp's most recent collaborations, Moretz said "Shadows" harkens back to Burton's most iconic, classic films.
“I think it’s special because it goes back to Tim’s roots. It goes back to 'Beetlejuice,' and 'Edward Scissorhands' and it goes back to the true Tim," she explained. "I love it because he gets in it, and he's in that little circle with Michelle, and Helena and Johnny, and it just, it happens. Everything goes down in the movie.”
What do you think of Moretz's thoughts on the film? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!

Here are excerpts from the press release for an upcoming staged reading.in which he reprises the role of "Don" in SHADES.
It is "a timely and double award-winning play about how America's

with secrets about grief and longing and about how the aftermath of
'good' and 'bad' wars affects people who love each other, especially
when their politics are at opposite poles from each other and when
long-buried family conflicts flare up: Are they driven apart, or will
they find ways to stay close? It is also about how war's effects depend
partly on a person's race and sex and about what it means today to be an
American and, even more, to be a 'good American.'"
SHADES will be presented Sat., Oct. 29, at the Ruskin Group Theatre, located at 3000 Airport Ave. in Santa Monica, CA. There is no charge for admission, but space is limited, so please call 760-404-1723 to reserve seats.

Johnny Depp Calls His 'Dark Shadows' Vampire 'Classic'
'These vampire movies have come out, and you go, 'Well, nobody looks like a vampire, man,' ' Depp tells MTV News.
By
Kara Warner (@karawarner)
Anytime Johnny Depp and Tim Burton get together for a film, fans know to expect the unexpected, particularly with their retellings of familiar stories like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Alice in Wonderland" and their next highly anticipated project, the big-screen adaptation of '60s vampire soap "Dark Shadows."
The fan fervor surrounding "Shadows" hit a high point recently when photos leaked of a heavily made-up Depp in his full Barnabas Collins costume, followed by the production's first official photo of the entire cast posed family portrait-style and Burton in action on set.
When MTV News caught up with Depp recently as he promoted "The Rum Diary," which hits theaters October 28, we asked what inspired the highly stylized look of the character.
"The memory that I have of watching the show as a kid, Jonathan Frid and what he did with that character was the main inspiration, for sure," he said of the actor who originated the role of Barnabas. "But also the idea of, over the years, these vampire movies have come out and vampire TV shows and stuff like that, and you go, 'Well, nobody looks like a vampire, man. What happened?'
"I adored Dracula, still do. I adored [everyone] from Bela Lugosi to Christopher Lee. I adore Nosferatu, [played by] Max Schrek. I adore all those wonderful sort-of horror films. And it was an opportunity really, an opportunity to sort of go into what really doesn't exist [onscreen] so much anymore, which is classic monster makeup and a classic monster character," Depp explained. "So that was really the inspiration Tim and I talked about."
Depp and Burton's "Dark Shadows," which also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Hayley and Eva Green, will be released May 11, 2012.
Check out everything we've got on "Dark Shadows."

Character Profiles For Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows
More articles by Blake Dew »
Written by: Blake Dew New character profiles have been released for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows. Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the screenplay, has spoken about writing the film adaptation of the 1960′s cult television series and gave character descriptions of the main characters.
Fans of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton (myself included) are expecting big things from Dark Shadows, which has been a passion project of Depp and Burton’s for years.
Check out the character descriptions given by Grahame-Smith below.
Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) – He was an 18th century gentleman, a businessman just before the Revolutionary War, who was transformed against his will into a vampire and buried in a tomb for two centuries. After he finally emerges, uncovered by construction workers in the year 1972, he seeks out his descendants — as well as some long-ago foes and a possible lost love.
“He’s been alive this whole time and very hungry, with no idea what’s going on outside,” says screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith (author of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which Burton is producing as a film.)
Barnabas is one vampire who is just as frightened of our times as we are of him, says producer Richard D. Zanuck: “Two-hundred years later, he’s suddenly walking into the town he saw being built and seeing girls in skirts, cars for the first time. It’s a man-out-of-time, supernatural horror story, but I put ‘horror’ in quotes.”
Despite his confusion, he’s still a ladies man. “In some sense he can be a terrifying killer; on the other hand, women have a weakness for him and he has a weakness for women,” Grahame-Smith says. “He can be a very well-mannered, well-meaning vampire most of the time, until his stomach is empty or someone challenges his beloved Collins family.”
Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) – This prim and proper psychiatrist, who has taken up residence with the Collins family to care for their troubled youngest boy, might seem to break that trend — but don’t bet on it. “Dr. Hoffman’s been there for years, working with David [the little boy in the photo] but not making any progress. He still claims he sees ghosts and talks with his dead mother,” Grahame-Smith says. “She’s crazy but brilliant. Obviously she’s an eccentric, and definitely likes a drink or two. She’s definitely a little bit off her rocker, and is a woman with a lot of secrets herself.” The writer teases: “She’ll also become interested in Barnabas in more than one way. “
Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Mortez) - Though she played a voracious child vampire in the acclaimed (but little seen) Let Me In, Moretz is on the human side of the spectrum in Dark Shadows — though that doesn’t mean this cousin of young David Collins (and daughter of Michelle Pfeiffer’s character, seen on the far right) isn’t without her own peculiarities. “Carolyn is your typical early-1970s teenager,” Grahame-Smith says. “She likes her music and likes her magazines, and does not like anyone in her family. She likes to keep her door closed and keep to herself. She’s pretty normal, but appearances can be deceiving. I wouldn’t say there is a normal person in this photo.”
Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) – The Bond girl from Casino Royale turns up here as the villain of the story. “Angelique is a witch who has known Barnabas since the 1700s, when they had an affair that went sour. She is the one who cursed him to be a vampire and locked him in that box,” Grahame-Smith says. “Since he has been away, Angelique has made it her life’s mission to destroy the Collins family. So when Barnabas turns up again after all these years, she’s not very happy to see him.”
David Collins (Gulliver McGrath) – Lonely, confused, and neglected by his pompous father, David has no one to confide in except his bizarre psychiatrist — and the dead people he claims to see. Grahame-Smith describes him as “a sweet, curious, precocious little boy whose family has branded him as slightly crazy.” Then he finally gets a new caretaker to look after him …
Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote) – This young woman arrives to become David’s new governess, only to find herself swept up in the vampire-witch melodrama. “When Barnabas meets Victoria, he’s instantly reminded of the woman he lost in the 1700s, before he was cursed to be a vampire,” Grahame-Smith says. “I wouldn’t say he falls in love with her, but there’s an instant attraction, an instant connection.” Is she the reincarnation of his doomed lover Josette du Pres? “We get the sense at the beginning she has a secret past, and that’s unraveled as it goes on,” the screenwriter says.
Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley) – How awesome is it to play an actual Groundskeeper Willie? The Oscar-nominee for Little Children is a slightly more competent servant than Mrs. Johnson, but that’s not saying much. “He’s the guy who takes out the trash, mows the lawns, and fixes the cars, except he’s usually so drunk and so disinterested that he doesn’t take his job seriously anymore,” Grahame-Smith says. “The lawn is overgrown, the house has fallen into disrepair, and all the cars are on cinder blocks. His heart’s definitely not in the job anymore.”
Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller) - This scion of the once-great Collins family is one of the main reasons the aristocratic clan has fallen into such disgrace. “He’s a creepy, self-centered guy who likes to order Willie around, likes to pretend the family is still on top of his game,” Grahame-Smith says. Not only is he a bad father to David, but he is a poor manager of whatever meager wealth the family retains. “When Barnabas shows up and has some very specific ideas about how to make things right, he’s obviously going to bump heads with Roger Collins.”
Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) – The mother of Carolyn Stoddard, and mother-figure to David, she’s the one adult member of the Collins clan who is at least slightly competent. “Elizabeth is the rock of the family. She’s the matriarch,” Grahame-Smith says. “She’s the keeper of the Collins history, and a fierce protector of what remains of her family. She’s the one that insists on the best care for the children, even though money isn’t what it used to be. She’s a very strong woman who unfortunately has been dealt a very difficult deck.” With a witch perpetually trying to destroy her, and a long lost vampire relative turning up to reclaim control, “there’s just too much for her to handle,” Grahame-Smith says.
Dark Shadows stars Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley, Chloe Moretz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonny Lee Miller, Gulliver McGrath and Bella Heathcote, and is set for release on May 11th, 2012.

**** JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT STARS IN NEW FILM
Joe (1991 David, Daniel) stars in the new release 50/50. It opened
nationwide today,. 9-30.
He plays a successful young man diagnosed with a rare form of spinal cancer.
It is based in the real-life experiences of screenwriter Will Reiser and his
best friend, actor Seth Rogen. Joe's "Adam" is based on Will, and Seth
himself portrays the friend, here named "Kyle." The dark comedy is receiving
critical praise for its delicate balance of realism, compassion, and humor.
