---- DAVID SELBY & SUSAN SULLIVAN STAR IN 2 SEPARATE CLASSIC PLAYS

David (Quentin Collins) and Susan (Ghost) both often participate in staged readings for L.A. Theatre Works. These shows feature many familiar actors seated onstage, holding scripts bound in notebooks. When their character has dialogue, the actor steps to a microphone and uses vocal inflections, facial expressions, and body language to interpret the lines and tone. Throughout the performance, live sound effects and music cues are heard. All this is recorded, along with the live audience reactions. The recorded production later is aired on Public Radio stations, streamed online, and available on CD. LATW's publicity: "All of our plays are performed without sets or costumes for later broadcast on public radio and internet streaming."

---- David stars in an upcoming LATW's  performance:of the iconic Bram Stoker's iconic novel DRACULA. The shows, presented in the radio theatre format described above, are May 18-20 at 8:00; May 21 at 2:30, and May 22 at 4:00.

THE PLAYBILL COVER and FIRST PAGE

A REVIEW

Review/Theater; Gothic 'Dark Shadows'
By MEL GUSSOW
Published: September 29, 1988
With the addition to the cast of Barnabas Collins, a troubled 175-year-old vampire, ''Dark Shadows'' began its long journey from late 1960's soap opera to Gothic cult phenomenon. As with ''Star Trek,'' ''Dark Shadows'' spawned spinoffs as well as collectibles. Now the experimental Via Theater has brought the serial to the stage. As adapted and directed by Brian Jucha, the show is running at Dance Theater Workshop. To make the transition from daytime television complete, performances begin at 11 P.M. and run well past the witching hour of midnight.
Mr. Jucha's version is an earnest, authentic evocation of the original. Clearly it would be of interest to fervent admirers of ''Dark Shadows,'' but for those less captivated by the skulduggery in the Collins closet, it has a limited appeal. The director has been judicious about not heightening the melodramatic and parodistic potential of the material. At the same time, as an evening of theater, it is an exceedingly somber experience.

The show begins with actors assembled around a table, holding their pose so long that they look like wax figures. Suddenly the tableau comes to life and we realize that we are witnesses at a seance, which sets the complex plot in motion. Soon the governess is projected back to 1795 and the play slowly reveals the roots of the family trauma and the secrets of Barnabas himself.
The ''Dark Shadows'' trappings are here, including the eerie theme music, portentous dialogue and a foreboding air, conveyed with the help of Sarah Edkins's scenery and Elizabeth Prince's costumes. As led by Mr. Jucha, the actors project a quiet intensity - Penny Boyer as the time-traveling governess, Tina Shepard in the Joan Bennett role and Julian Stone as Barnabas. Mr. Stone's Barnabas, as was true of Jonathan Frid in the role on television, is unlike Dracula except for his odd appetite. He could be considered a vulnerable vampire.
Looking at several episodes in the television serial - in New York it is rerun twice a week on Channel 31 -one sees that the soap opera had an improvised, even an offhanded manner, as if the actors were making up their lines as they spoke them. The stage ''Dark Shadows'' is a more polished effort, as one might expect from the Via Theater. Last season, the company collaborated on ''No Plays No Poetry,'' a provocative environmental interpretation of Brechtian theory - a far more consequential theatrical work than ''Dark Shadows.'' Going for the Jugular DARK SHADOWS, adapted and directed by Brian Jucha; set design, Sarah Edkins; lighting design by Roma Flowers; sound design by Teese Gohl; costume design by Elizabeth Prince; stage manager, Robin Riddell. Dance Theater Workshop/Economy Tires Theater presents Via Theater's production. At 219 West 19th Street. Created and performed by: Penny Boyer, John Hagan, Brendan Harris, Yolanda Hawkins, Lisa Marcus, Larry Maxwell, Coco McPherson, Barney O'Hanlon, Tina Shepard, Julian Stone, Valeria Vasilevski and Rachel Wineberg.

A Chat With Round 2

As recently reported, model kit company Round 2 have recently acquired a license to reissue the classic 1960s Dark Shadows kits, originally produced by MPC. We caught up with James Hood at Round 2 to talk about the new range:

Tell us a little about Round 2?
Round 2 is an innovative hobby and collectibles company located in South Bend, Indiana. Round 2 and its creative team are dedicated to producing detailed, quality collectible items that appeal to the young and the young at heart.

How did the decision to revive these particular kits come about?
One of our objectives is to take advantage of the [classic kit manufacturers] AMT and MPC's tooling banks, to uncover and bring back long-out-of-production kits like the Dark Shadows models.

Have any release dates been set?
Our current plan is to bring out the Barnabas kit in April 2011, the Werewolf in August and the Barnabas Collins Vampire Van in December.

How closely will the new releases match the originals?
They will match the original kits almost exactly. The only changes we may consider are alterations to make sure the kits fit together properly. Some MPC kits from that era from lacked positioning pins or tended to assemble with noticeable gaps at the seams. We'll look at correcting issues like that. We also plan to use reproduction artwork from the original packaging, though we usually need to make compromises here and there to satisfy licensor demands for modern logos and trademarks.

The classic figures came with poseable rubber arms and glow-in-the-dark parts. Will those be reproduced?
We will be looking into the possibility of injecting the arms in standard hard styrene plastic as well as the softer PVC of the originals. We want to be loyal to the content of the original kits, but builders today want to make their models as impeccably as possible. The soft plastic would cause some problems achieving a perfect look, and we've found that the flexibility of the arms is rather limited anyway. If we can inject them in styrene, we will include copies of the arms in both materials. Optional glow-in-the-dark parts will be included just like the original release.

Where will fans be able to buy the kits? The kits will be available through standard hobby stores. Bricks and mortar stores are becoming fewer and fewer, but there are many online retailers that also carry
our products, which
can also be purchased through our website.

And finally, if these reissues are a success, would Round 2 consider producing all-new Dark Shadows kits?
As we say to most inquiries we receive, anything is possible.

announces the following breaking news in this Online News Update "bulletin."

**** JONATHAN FRID READS A CLASSIC POEM
****  SPECIAL OFFER FOR DS AUDIODRAMAS

---- JONATHAN FRID'S CHRISTMAS READING GIFT TO YOU, THE FANS

Jonathan (Barnabas, Bramwell) has added a special holiday-season treat on his official website  www.jonathanfrid.com

He presents a dramatic reading of the iconic "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" / "The Night Before Christmas." The descriptive poem, long attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, was first published in 1823. It is considered a major cultural influence on the popular images and ideas of Santa Claus' annual visits to homes around the world.

Jonathan, wearing a grey-toned plaid shirt, looks into the camera as he introduces "a poem most of you no doubt have come in touch with one Christmas occasion or another over the years." He then begins to read. As he's done with his dramatic readings since he began them in the 1980s, he flavors the familiar words with his vocal range, facial expressions, and gestures.

Whether you know and love the poem or not, its phrases and details are part of the common holiday experience. SG thanks Jonathan for sharing his own interpretation. SG also hopes all fans enjoy it by visiting     http://www.jonathanfrid.com/New%20Site/news.htm

The first series of full-cast DS audiodrama CDs and Lara Parker's audiobook of her out-of-print 1998 novel "Angelique's Descent" can be purchased at special reduced rates from now until Jan. 15."

DARK SHADOWS STORYLINE

Victoria Winters: episode 1 (27 June 1966) to 127 (20 December 1966) Victoria Winters arrives at Collinwood as governess for David Collins and encounters strange goings-on in the old mansion. Elizabeth Collins Stoddard has a secret and never leaves the Collinwood estate. Her daughter Carolyn is staying out to all hours. Roger Collins, David's father, is afraid that someone is trying to kill him. And Burke Devlin has returned to Collinsport.

The Murder of Bill Malloy: episode 46 (29 August 1966) to 126 (19 December 1966) Bill Malloy, Elizabeth's right-hand man, threatens to publicly reveal hushed-up details about the feud between Roger Collins and Burke Devlin, and involving Sam Evans. Malloy's body is then discovered floating in the waters at the base of Widow's Hill. The ghost of Bill Malloy appears to Victoria Winters, and later the ghost of Josette emerges from her portrait at the old house. The spirits of wailing women are heard from Widow's Hill.

Laura the Phoenix: episode 128 (21 December 1966) to 192 (21 March 1967) Young David Collins's mother Laura returns after a ten year absence, searching for her son. She is an immortal phoenix, and wishes to have him join her in the sacred fires of the Egyptian god Ra.

Jason McGuire: episode 195 (24 March 1967) to 275 (14 July 1967) Jason McGuire, an old friend of Elizabeth's long-missing husband Paul Stoddard, shows up and insinuates himself into the Collins household. He knows a dark secret about Elizabeth's missing husband and, much to the family's dismay, she submits to his demands, which includes allowing his violent drifter friend Willie Loomis to stay at Collinwood.

Barnabas: episode 211 (22 March 1967) to 365 (17 November 1967) Barnabas Collins, a nearly two-hundred-year-old vampire, is released from his coffin and brings terror to Collinsport. Doctor Julia Hoffman is called to investigate the strange kidnapping of Maggie Evans, a Collinsport waitress whom the vampire believes to be the reincarnation of his long lost love, Josette.

1795: episode 366 (14 November 1967) to 460 (29 March 1968) A seance is held in the great house at Collinwood, during which Victoria Winters travels back in time to the year 1795. In that era, Barnabas is still an ordinary human being, but becomes the object of desire for a deadly witch Angelique, who invokes the vampiric curse upon him. Meanwhile, Victoria is accused of witchcraft by the paranoiac Rev. Trask. She's defended in court by Peter Bradford, a man who follows her back through time to the 20th century.

Dream Curse/Adam and Eve: episode 461 (1 April 1968) to 637 (3 December 1968) Angelique, a witch who tricked Barnabas into marrying her in the 1790s, returns. At the same time, Barnabas and Dr. Julia Hoffman explore the possibility of freeing Barnabas from his curse, by giving life to an artificial being called Adam.

Werewolf/Quentin's Ghost: episode 638 (4 December 1968) to 700 (28 February 1969) A werewolf is loose on the Collins estate and the ghost of Quentin Collins is terrorizing the children, David and Amy.

1897: episode 701 (3 March 1969) to 884 (13 November 1969) In order to save the imperilled David, Barnabas travels back in time using the I Ching, to unravel the mystery of Quentin's ghost. There he encounters Angelique, the phoenix Laura Collins, a gypsy curse, lycanthropy, and the hand of the dreaded Count Petofi.

The Leviathans: episode 885 (14 November 1969) to 980 (27 March 1970) An ancient Lovecraftian race of beings coerce Barnabas into joining their ranks. Together they attempt to enslave the Collins family and bring the town under the thrall of their mysterious leader, Jeb Hawkes.

Parallel Time: episode 981 (30 March 1970) to 1060 (17 July 1970) In a closed-off section of the house, Barnabas and Julia discover a doorway to a parallel universe, where the master of the house Quentin Collins has recently married Maggie Evans, who finds herself threatened by the vengeful spirit of Quentin's first wife, Angelique.

1995: episode 1061 (20 July 1970) to 1070 (31 July 1970) Barnabas and Julia travel forward in time to a Collinwood that has been destroyed and a Collins family either dead or mad.

Gerard: episode 1071 (3 August 1970) to 1109 (24 September 1970) Ghosts from the 1840s possess David Collins and Hallie Stokes. Barnabas and Julia try to find a way to prevent the future destruction of Collinwood.

1840: episode 1110 (25 September 1970) to 1198 (27 January 1971) Using a stairway through time hidden within the walls of Collinwood, Julia travels back to the 1840s to unravel the mystery of Gerard and Daphne. When Barnabas joins her they find an unexpected ally in their old foe, Angelique.

1841 in Parallel Time: episode 1199 (28 January 1971) to 1245 (2 April 1971) In a parallel universe Bramwell Collins returns home to find that his true love, Catherine Harridge, has married his wealthy cousin, Morgan Collins. The Collins family is under a curse that requires them to hold a lottery, the loser to spend the night in a room that will leave them either dead or insane.
